What Is Lenire? A Plain-Language Guide to This FDA-Cleared Tinnitus Treatment

If you have been living with ringing in your ears, you know how exhausting it is to be told there is nothing anyone can do about it.

That is no longer the whole story. Lenire is an FDA-cleared treatment for tinnitus that uses a different approach than anything most people have tried before — and the results from clinical studies are genuinely encouraging.

What Tinnitus Actually Is

Tinnitus (most people say TIN-ih-tus or tih-NY-tus — both are correct) is the perception of sound when no external sound is present. It can be ringing, buzzing, hissing, whooshing, or clicking. It can be constant or come and go. It affects an estimated 50 million adults in the United States, and for about 20 million of those, it is a daily disruption that affects sleep, concentration, and quality of life.

For years, the only options were white noise machines, sound therapy, and counseling to help people cope. Those tools help some people. But they are not treatment in the way Lenire is.

How Lenire Works

Lenire uses a technology called bimodal neuromodulation. In plain language: it stimulates the brain using two different inputs at the same time — gentle sounds delivered through wireless headphones, and small electrical pulses delivered to the surface of the tongue through a mouthpiece called Tonguetip.

The combination is designed to activate the brain’s natural ability to reorganize itself (called neuroplasticity) and reduce the brain’s sensitivity to the tinnitus signal. In the pivotal clinical trial, 86.2 percent of participants with chronic tinnitus experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms after 12 weeks of home-based treatment sessions.

Treatment sessions are 60 minutes per day and are done at home with a device prescribed and monitored by a trained provider. Revolution Hearing is a certified Lenire provider.

Who Is a Candidate

Lenire is designed for adults with chronic tinnitus who have had symptoms for at least six months and have not found adequate relief from other approaches. Candidates need to have at least some functional hearing in both ears. A thorough evaluation helps determine if Lenire is the right fit.

If you or someone you care about has been living with tinnitus and feels like you have run out of options, this is worth a conversation.

Ask us about Lenire at your next visit to Revolution Hearing. Our audiologists will walk you through whether you are a candidate and what the process looks like from start to finish.
