How Noise Damages Hearing
Inside the inner ear, thousands of tiny hair cells convert sound vibrations into electrical signals the brain interprets as sound. These cells do not regenerate. Once they are damaged or destroyed, the loss is permanent.
Loud sound — particularly sustained loud sound — damages these cells physically. The louder the sound and the longer the exposure, the greater the damage. But what many people do not realize is that exposure at lower but still elevated levels over many years can accumulate into significant hearing loss without any single dramatic event.
The threshold for potential damage is around 85 decibels. Lawnmowers, power tools, hair dryers, and highway driving typically fall in that range. A two-hour lawn mowing session every week for thirty years is not a trivial cumulative exposure.
Who Is Most Affected
Adults now in their 50s, 60s, and 70s grew up and worked in an era before hearing protection was widely used. Military veterans — particularly from the Vietnam and Korean War eras — have among the highest rates of hearing loss and tinnitus of any demographic group in the country. Tinnitus is the single most common service-connected disability in the VA system.
Farmers, factory workers, construction workers, musicians, and anyone who worked in a loud environment for years before hearing protection became standard practice carry meaningful hearing risk.

What Noise-Induced Loss Looks Like

On an audiogram, it shows up as a characteristic dip or notch at that frequency. People with this pattern often describe hearing people talk but not understanding what they are saying.
Tinnitus frequently accompanies noise-induced hearing loss, as the same hair cell damage that causes hearing loss can also generate the phantom sounds of tinnitus.
