Tinnitus Treatment Options: What Works and What Does Not

If you have been dealing with ringing, buzzing, or hissing in your ears, you have probably already tried a few things. Maybe you read that certain supplements help. Maybe someone suggested white noise machines. Maybe a doctor told you to just learn to live with it.

Some of those approaches have real merit. Others are backed by little evidence. Here is an honest look at what the research supports.

What Has Limited Evidence

Supplements marketed for tinnitus — ginkgo biloba, zinc, magnesium, and others — have been studied repeatedly. The consistent finding is that none of them significantly reduce tinnitus symptoms in clinical trials. They are not harmful in typical doses, but the evidence for their effectiveness is weak.

Ear candles are sometimes promoted as a way to clear blockages that cause tinnitus. No credible research supports this, and ear candles carry a genuine risk of injury.

What Actually Helps Many People

Sound therapy works by providing the brain with a competing or masking sound that makes the tinnitus less noticeable. White noise machines, nature sounds, and low-level background music are common tools. For many people, this reduces the distress caused by tinnitus even when it does not reduce the tinnitus itself.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) combines sound therapy with counseling to help the brain gradually habituate to the tinnitus signal — essentially learning to classify it as unimportant background noise. This approach has solid research support and helps a meaningful portion of patients.

Hearing aids, for people who have both tinnitus and hearing loss, often reduce tinnitus symptoms as a secondary benefit. When the brain receives clearer sound input from the outside world, the tinnitus signal often becomes less prominent.

Lenire: An FDA-Cleared Approach

Lenire is an FDA-cleared device that uses bimodal neuromodulation — simultaneous sound delivered through headphones and gentle electrical pulses delivered to the tongue — to reduce the brain’s sensitivity to the tinnitus signal. In clinical trials, 86.2 percent of participants with chronic tinnitus experienced meaningful improvement after 12 weeks of home-based treatment sessions.

It is not a cure, and it is not right for every patient. But for people who have not found adequate relief from other approaches, it represents a genuinely new option with real clinical evidence behind it.

Revolution Hearing is a certified Lenire provider. If you have been living with tinnitus and feel like you have exhausted your options, ask us about Lenire at your next visit. Our audiologists will help you determine whether you are a good candidate and what the treatment process looks like.
